Helping Lloyd’s Register to navigate the choppy waters of a skills-first transformation

How Solvd helped LR establish a more agile performance and people development framework.

The LR challenge

Lloyd’s Register launched a new strategy. Part of this strategy was to modernise skills development to create a more agile organisation: One that can quickly adapt to disruptive trends in the industry such as AI and alternative fuels. Solvd Together’s brief was to provide clarity and practical guidance in delivering this change, and to help drive adoption of new skills and new ways of working.

The Solvd solution

The first phase of work was about clarity. We met with the Executive team to understand the outcomes they were expecting from the Skills-first transformation based on the company strategy. We then conducted a series of research projects to bring the colleague voice into the design. This allowed our client to validate Executive assumptions and challenge, where necessary, with data. This positioned L&D as a strategic partner in delivering the business strategy.

What Solvd delivered

A research report that looked at the day-to-day experience of shipping Surveyors. This was designed to assess the value of investing in a skills-framework.
A whitepaper that defined what being a ‘Trusted Adviser’ in maritime would mean for colleagues day-to-day.
A research report that provided insights and recommendations for the employee experience of the career conversations.
An assessment of Skills-first platforms, including vendor selection, design and adoption recommendations.
A series of technical animations supporting Surveyors in communicating to customers about alternative fuels.

The impact

The legacy approach to skills at LR was a blend of technical and behavioural competencies hosted on SAP. It was proving challenging for leaders and team members to apply the competencies in performance and development conversations. The goal of our engagement was to provide a solid foundation from which to develop a global skills framework for all 3,500+ colleagues.

This in turn, provided a modern, flexible approach to managing skills, promoting new ways of working to deliver the new strategy, and enabled LR to adapt quickly to trends in the industry. Solvd’s work has allowed LR to refine their thinking, drive adoption of new skills, and select a digital partner to build a fit-for-purpose skills platform.

The project is on-going with Solvd Together providing a global skills development programme that has reached over 80% of the organisation.

The challenge

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
