Legal & General wanted to encourage and enable conversations to make DEI real for their people. We created a practical toolkit to empower those conversations and nurture trust, understanding, and inclusivity within the business

What’s the story?

The challenge

Legal & General know DEI isn’t just the right thing to do – it makes good business sense. They’re all for creating a more inclusive society and making the world a better place. Now that’s a mission Solvd are proud to be part of!

We teamed up to create the Inclusivity Conversation Toolkit – to help people hold exploratory conversations respectfully, honestly, and fearlessly. All in the name of prompting more inclusive behaviours across the company.

The Toolkit

Through our Define and Discover research sessions with the Legal & General team, we identified that people wanted to have these conversations, but weren’t sure how. They feared offending others, or coming over wrong when discussing areas they felt unfamiliar with.

So we created our simple – but powerful - Inclusivity Conversation Toolkit - and in keeping with our human-centred design approach, we piloted the Toolkit across 4 teams across the company, with each workshop facilitated by a Legal & General staff member. They covered 3 conversations:

• My Personal Histories – exploring name origins and cultural upbringing
• Busting Assumptions – exploring preconceptions, assumptions, and biases in the team
• My Favorite Mistake – identifying mistakes that have led to major life lessons

The lasting impact

“If we didn’t have a frame or toolkit, I don’t know how we would have ever started to open up this sort of discussion.” 

• 100% focus group participants would recommend the Inclusive Teams Toolkit to a friend or colleague in another team
• People felt more comfortable having conversations about DEI after using the Toolkit (NPS: pre+18, post +53)
• People felt more included and more connected to their team after using the Toolkit (NPS: pre -7, post+23)

The Toolkit has strengthened the sense of belonging and inclusion in Legal & General, as well as improving its DEI strategy. If we didn’t have a frame or toolkit, I don’t know how we would have ever started to open up this sort of discussion.
